Opened in 1959 its outdated now, no question. Rostock had onec the most succesful breeding of poalr bears in geramny and holds the studbook for the species. I don't know anything about plans, to build a new exhibit for them, but they should do it.

The description of the photo proves the fact that animals will breed in the worst conditions, and this concrete bunker would have been perfect in WWII.
Rome wasn't build at one day, Snowleopard, and I'm sure, you're a rich man, so please send the zoo so much money, so they build every old exhibits at the same time....
Like I said, this exhibit is outdated, but it isn't the worst bear exhibit, there are many more newer bear exhibits which are more worse I know....
This old exhibits is bigger than the polar bear exhibit at Stuttgart Zoo, opend in 1991, it has shade, it has a bigger pool, natural trees and a sandpool, al this things are missing at Stuttgart or Berlin Zoo for examples.
They have to wait until the old male has died, before they can start construction of a new polar bear exhibit.
While I agree that this grotto is damn ugly it is actually not the worst I have ever seen. It is semi-specious and has a large pool and good enrichment.
Obivously the keepers are doing a lot for the animals here. And having seen Rostock Zoo's lates projects, the Monkey House and Big Cat House, I have high hopes for their future.
