Wuppertal Zoo - Wolf exhibit

The exhibit for Arctic wolves in Wuppertal Zoo. A nice little exhibit, I think.
What would you say is nice about this? It looks small, barren, surrounded by electric wire and metal fencing. What am I missing?

You miss that exept for the size (that is ok, but not huge), the wolfes have no problem with the other stuff. And better a fence that keeps the animals inside the exhibit than let them run free. The hotwire in front of the moat is because of the babys. And better a fence, so the animals can look out and can get new looks, than fake rock, so they are locked up to all outside-stuff.

Not every exhibit, that looks ugly for some people here, is bad for the animals.

@Animal: A nice little exhibit? Are you joking? Zoos are about more than just keeping animals in ugly caged holes, they are about preaching conservation and education to the public. Every major zoo states those goals as its aims, and this exhibit fails miserably in many regards. Small and badly outdated.

For me, tha animal is most important! So better a fence where it can see its souroundings, than all closed up by fake rock.
You should learn that the needs of YOU and the needs of the animals are not the same.

I agree. Wolves need space, grass, hiding opportunities, a pool, etc, and I see none of those things in this electrified mess.

I agree. Wolves need space,

Yes. And this enclosure is not as large as I'd like.

No, they don't.

hiding opportunities,

Yes. This enclosure has these.

No, they don't. They may enjoy grass and a pool, but no wolf can be said to be suffering or not being allowed to behave naturally through lack of a pool. If we were talking otters or hippos I'd agree! :)

etc, and I see none of those things in this electrified mess.

I can't see how 'electrified' is being used in a derogatory manner here, when so many of the lush exhibits that are lauded elsewhere depend just as much on hotwire. I can understand not liking the rather ugly fences here; but this has a whiff of hypocrisy about it.

Incidentally, the wolf exhibit at Wuppertal is not one of my favourites; it could do with being bigger (though this picture does make it look smaller than it is - it continues out of shot to the right) and the viewing is limited and (yes) the fences are ugly. But it should be said that it is in heavy woodland, so grass is not really an option.

And just for the record the wolves do have a small pool in this exhibit as well as hiding opportunities, like Maguari said :)

I am not saying that this is a very attractive exhibit to look at or one of my favourites, but if we are to criticize it then let it be the right things we criticize it for.

Okay then. This is an unattractive exhibit. Period. Fine for the animals but then that's not really the point.

Just to stir up the usual aesthetics vs. function argument that will never be resolved!
