The entrance building to Magdeburg Zoo. The Magdeburg Zoo opened in 1950 and currently spans 16 hectares and has a small stream running through it (a tributary of the Elbe River). The zoo houses around 800 animals spanning 170 species.
This new entrance building called the Zoowelle (Zoo Wave) was opened in 2009. In here are a couple of terraria, an indoor exhibit for meerkats (Suricatta suricatta) exhibitions, a zoo school, a souvenir shop, a small diner and offices.
