This male hyena, held in an enclosure with non-subspecific female Striped Hyena, was the only individual of his subspecies held in Europe until an import of wild individuals into Moscow Zoo in late April 2014. This animal also represented the first prolonged view of a Striped Hyena I had managed; my previous encounter with the species at Twycross Zoo having given me only a fleeting glimpse.
The upload of this image, incidentally, means that I have now uploaded photographs of all four species of hyena for comparison, as well as photographs of the Southern Aardwolf which as has been noted in the past may merit species distinction.
