@Someone other than Sun Wukong: What IS this thing? Between this, the walk-through boa exhibit, the "African trophy room" terrarium, and the Fantasyland architecture the Budapest Zoo looks like the freakiest zoo on the planet.
As KCZooFan suggests, I believe this will be a Guinea Pig (possibly and/or Rabbit) Village - a suprisingly common feature in European children's zoos. I don't remember it from my 2003 visit, but then the only thing I really remember about the children's zoo is the huge pile of rescued hedgehogs (and squirrels if I recall correctly).
I just had the weirdest image of a pile of hibernating hedgehogs all clumped together in a sort of pyramid effect. Must stop my imagination after a couple of beers...
