Some years ago when I visited, Rome Zoo's Brown Bears were housed in just about the tiniest cages I've ever seen- apart from those terrible Chinese bear 'farms.' They had little antiquated barred cages with just a few feet to move around in. I have never felt so sorry for bears anywhere in a Zoo. This is a big improvement.
Yes, this is the brown bear exhibit. The photo shows less than a third of the enclosure, which was sponsored by Nat Geo Wild in Italy and looks fantastic with various viewing points around the enclosure, including this underwater viewing area and a cave-like viewing area (you can see the window into the visitor's cave in the wall at the back of the enclosure on the far right of the photo.)
