I visited the bioparco in 2009 and according to the lovely guidebook, "Al Bioparco..dal piccolo al grande, la tua guida" there are 100 japanese macaques at the bioparco. they form a self sustaining breeding group. the founders arrived from Oita, japan in 1977.
