Orangutan Enclosure

Thanks for your pictures of the Rome Zoo, Hexaprotodon. This is a zoo of one of the world's major cities that gets very little discussion on Zoochat.

Are chimps and orangs the only apes at the Rome Zoo?

Thanks David.

Orangs and Chimps were the only apes that I saw - certainly no gorillas there now. I didn't see any gibbons either but it was a flying visit so might have missed them.

That visitor - holding a bag - looks very unimpressed by the orangutan enclosure!

I hope she enjoyed the rest of the zoo more (and that she did not mind you dragging her round a boring old zoo rather than dong something cultural....).

She didn't like it much - but then her favourite zoos are Port Lympne and Whipsnade - not City zoos like Rome! She rather likes Twycross as well which defies all reason!

By all accounts much better than the previous ape accommodation.

The previous Ape House was typical old style-small barred cages, dingy interiors, nothing to climb on- this is obviously a vast improvement. Unfortunately they(probably) only still have the three hybrid females living in it.

Rome used to have Gorillas- the last two, Bongo 2nd and Romina(the only Gorilla ever born there) were sent to Bristol Zoo some years ago. Romina is still there while Bongo moved to London Zoo and became 'Bobby', and died there a few years later.

Possibly because there isn't anything outstanding here- as a typical urban zoo in a Mediterranean country, there is(or was) a lot of archaic architecture including some truly dreadful enclosures. It has recently been upgraded, some species have left and it is now called a 'Bioparc' but the infrastructure probably stays the same.
