African Lion Enclosure

Not for the first time, I find myself looking at this enclosure and wondering if the lions wouldn't appreciate a more traditional barrier, and having the moat filled in.

is it just the perspective, or does the moat really occupy more area than the actual ground area?

I think the moat covers a larger area than the land in this exhibit, its certainly not the best lion exhibit out there, really its saving grace are the big cat cages next door...

If you look on Google maps with the satellite you can see the relative areas of land and water - its the exhibit on the north perimeter of the zoo (adjoining a carpark), with long narrow buildings either side.

I've attached a grab below:

on that attached image it looks like the moat and land area are roughly equal. I reckon it would be good for giant otters :D

The exhibit is indeed too small, althouugh there is a smaller cage adjacent to it, but still way too small for 1.3 lions. But they have the problem that it is a listed monument, being it the first non-cage exhibit for predators in the Zoo.

@zooboy, the cat cages next to this are not that bad, but that is mostly because they are almost empty, but now they are all big enough for their inhabitants (1 lynx, 1 amur leopard, 1 or 2 coati, serval & fossa).

The option would be to reduce the width of the moat, leaving just a "water hole" and replace most of it with glass, filling the rest with soil. Wouldn't cost much.
