West Indian Manatee at Artis 2002

thank you! At least they bred in this thing for about 20 years. (the only way to prevent this would have been turning to the wall i guess,..). Hopefully someone will post a pic of the whole enclosure one day.

Tha is actually a picture of almost all of it. Manatees lived and bred there!
Then, after they left it was converted to an exhibit featuring large South american fishes (red-tailed catfish, pacus, various cichlids, arowanas). Then it was considered too small even for those and converted to terrarium with marine toads (Bufo marinus) that had been kept there for some time. Now you can see the whole thing as a planter in gorilla building of Artis. You can get a feeling how small it really is.

@Rhinopithecus, I think the south American fish were in there only temporary, because their tank in the aquarium was remodelled.

I believe there are now some smaller species of tortoise in here

Thanks for the updates PeGe, as you can see it wasn't that big an area, and as I recall it does look a sort of 'W' shape. It was very odd set up for so rare a species zoologicaly speaking at least.

They have not kept them since 2002 and I don't think they plan to keep them again. It was certainly not in their last Masterplan but then again these things change all the time.

Shame. I generally think that Artis is synonymous with Manatee's! Anywhere I could see this master plan?

Manatees have (almost certainly not) done as well as in this outdated tank.
