Looks brilliant, except one would wish that at least one living trees was available for climbing. But apart from that: very, very good!

If the trees were "available" they would not be "living." Chimps--especially in the numbers housed for over 30 years at Arnhem--are inherently destructive of natural vegetation. This huge exhibit is a great compromise with shade and greenery augmented by climbing structures.

Now this is what I call a decent enclosure for chimps.I hope that the side of the moat nearest the chimps is shallow, as for some reason as yet not thoroughly investigated, chimps have a terrible track record with regard to moat accidents.

The moat is quite shallow(at least near the chimps). Next year this exhibti will celebrate it's 40st birthday, and in the 40 years between many many worse exhibits were built.

Also at Burgers Zoo chimps died in the moat:

Nikkie/Nickey 1/0 *1965 (Holiday on Ice) + March 1984
Jolliky 1/0 *1992 (Burgers Zoo) + 1993

These are only those of which I heard in 1993.

Who is Jolliky, this name I can't find. The only chimp name in Arnhem that comes nere to that name is "Jokuli", born in 1993, died 3 months later by "unknown means", but that's a female

Oha.... female may be correct, but the day of birth differs too ???

In June 1993 I was behind the scenes and a friendly zookeeper told me those stories, day of birth and death.

I don't know anymore about the chimpanzies at Burgers, except

the notices from 1993,

the books from Frans de Waal, who has written about the Arnhem-chimpanzees (Unsere haarigen Vettern. Neueste Erfahrungen mit Schimpansen. München 1983 and Wilde Diplomaten. Versöhnung und Entspannungspolitik bei Affen und Menschen - Orig.: Peacemaking among Primates -. München 1991),

the Arnhem chimpanzees Puist (“Stilje”, 18.6.60 in Paris) with her daughters Ponga (*24.01.82 Arnhem) and Pranka Paya (*05.02.88 Arnhem), and Pongas childs Pam (*6.5.96 Rhenen) and Pino (*8.10.92 Rhenen, meanwhile given away, China?) go to Safaripark, Hodenhagen in 1997. I know, last year Puist and her daughters were still alive. The 50 year old Puist (Stilje) is called “Oma”.
