Actually, aardvarks fit the rainforest theme quite well. They are extremely adaptable and also live in the rainforests in parts of West Africa as well as grasslands, savannahs and woodlands. It is believed that the aarvarks' range is only limitied through the number of suitable ants and termites to feed on in the area.
Question to the zoochat-members of the netherlands:
Is there a time when the chance is high to see those cool creatures moving (Don't say at night, I know they are nocturnal)? I have visited their exhibit in Burgers Bush about 10 times in the last 20 years but - except one time, where I did not had my camera with me (damn!) - they were allways sleeping during the operating hours.
Out of my three times visiting Burgers Zoo I have been lucky twice to see the aardvarks moving when passing by this exhibit in late afternoon. In most zoos this is the time you have the best chances of seeing aardvarks active.

This is really interesting Toddy. I did not know this. Have you visited aardvarks in the wild? I have seen lots of aardvark holes, but unfortunately not the critters themselves.

Unfortunately, I have not yet visited continental Africa. My knowledge on aardvarks stems from the fact that they are my favourite animal. This summer I even had to wrestle one to keep it from escaping it's enclosure in Randers Tropical Zoo, Denmark. Good times
