The first of the four themed areas in GaiaZoo is 'Limburg'. Limburg is the Dutch province in which GaiaZoo is located. The concept of GaiaZoo, inspired by Lovelock's Gaia hypothesis, starts with Limburg and the history of Limburg in three geological eras/periods (Carboniferous, Cretaceous and Ice Age), which is then connected to animals living today in the three other themed areas (Rainforests of Amazonia and Congo holding rainforest species, African Savannah holding large African species and Taiga holding species from the Taiga, Europe and the northern hemisphere). The Limburg area holds the restaurant 'Plateau of Gaia" and a historical farm with different kinds of livestock (often ancient breeds of livestock as well).
