wouldn't this be a major stresser for the bison? they seem in quite close proximity.

Predator-Prey exhibits have been around since the early 1900s (maybe longer, most books give Carl Hagenbeck all the credit for the concept) in Europe and a few years later they started in America and Australia. Hence the above is neither new nor unusual; apart from perhaps that Hagenbeck and his strictest followers would rather have exhibited Brown or Black Bears next to the Bison. Polar Bears and Bison do not occupy the same parts of North America. But as a huge polar bear fan, I do not care as long as I get to see polar bears :)

No, I cannot imagine the Bison feeling any more stressed from seeing bears all the time than from hearing the lions roar from a distance. The bison only need to occupy the paddock one or two days before realising the bears will not do them any harm.

Another way this exhibit could have been more geographically accurate would be to have musk oxen instead of bison.

That is true but personally I will take Bison over Musk Ox, Reindeer or any other Northern ungulate any day :)

They are probably a bit more exotic to you than they are to me. There are some in a cow pasture a few miles from my house! :)

It was once planned that muskox and beaver will live on the place of the bison enclosure, but I don't know if this is still the case.

There has been a plan to mix bison with musk ox. The Beavers were planned at an other side, but near the polarbears, together with enclosures for snow hares, raccoons (not built yet); and pole foxes, lemmings, snowy owls, and steller sea eagles (already in place).

Steller Sea Eagles? That is a bit of a geographic stretch....
