You don't get voted 'Most Liveable' city without having a world class museum. Over one million people visited last year and it attracts some of the most sought after exhibitions in the world. In recent years it has hosted exhibitions on Pompeii and the Titanic as well as being one of the few museums outside of Egypt to host the Tutankhamun Exhibition.

I have just been looking on their website, it does look like an awesome museum. Would you say the collection of invertebrates is the best in Australia? Especially with the tarantulas. Although no butterflies. Is the thorny devil on display? And its free for students!

I will add it to my list of reasons to move to Melbourne :D

I've never seen a thorny devil and there are a whole bunch of mounted butterflies (I've attached photos). In my opinion it's the best invertebrate display I've seen anywhere (Bristol Zoo is a close second).

On a side note Melbourne's really good for free stuff too. All three zoos are free for anyone under 16, and the National Gallery of Victoria and the three MV museums (Melbourne Museum, the Immigration Museum, and the Scienceworks) are free for anyone with a concession card.

Definitely worth a visit then. I think Bristol Zoo had the biggest invert collection I've seen, but I preferred London Zoo's display. The best I have seen was at the Berlin Aquarium, which largely combined the butterfly house with the inverts room, and was the most interactive.

One more question about the museum, does the "forest" section contain birds? If so, are these in a walkthrough or seperated aviary?

The Forest Gallery has a few small birds that are free flying. It's certainly not the most crowded aviary because today I only saw satin bowerbirds and a small native finch (diamond firetails maybe).

According to the ZAA census the museum holds Tawny Frogmouths, Satin Bowerbirds, Superb Fairy-Wren and Red-browed Finch.
