Rotterdam Zoo - Asian Mountain

The Asian Mountain exhibit in the the Asia-theme in Rotterdam Zoo. Probably the least charming exhibit in this otherwise fantastic theme. Holds Sichuan takin and rhesus macaques.

And yet -lots of space for the monkeys and lots of climbing possibilites on that fake mountain or what ever it is supposed to resemble...

Oh yes, the monkeys have a bery decent habitat here even if it does look a bit weird. It's the takins that could use a new exhibit.

...or a bigger mountain.

But if this is the least charming exhibit than the Asia section must be pretty first class.

It must be said that this mountain is also the olny old enclousure left in asia! This has not yet been updated, because it will do for the time being. It is still the same mountain as it was in the time of hamadryas baboons, aoudad, and probably many more. Building a new hymalyan area on this site is planned to be about the last project before completion of the masterplan.
Currently there are 4 rhesusmacaques (at least 2 look quite old), and 1 male sichuan takin (Benny). The takin uses the mountain very regularly as well!

In 1969 this was home to aoudads and gelada's, both species bred very well in the period 1957-1969 26 geladas and 43 aoudads were born here. the guide says "they never fight with each other" and the gelada's did even ride on the aoudads!
