Morepork

28th June 2015.
Minor correction - this is a Southern Boobook, not a Morepork; a labelling error common in European collections due to the split of the two taxa in the early 2000's.

Oh my gosh that is so bizzare because I lived in New Zealand for many years and sort of thought it didn't look like a morepork.

Also, on the sign it said they live in Australia and New Zealand but moreporks only live in NZ.

Plus, if this isn't a morepork, than it can't live in NZ at all because NZ only has one owl. They just got it totally wrong.

Basically, their signposting is using the old taxonomy in which Southern Boobook (Ninox boobook) was classified a subspecies of Morepork, as were Tasmanian Boobook (Ninox leucopsis) and New Zealand Morepork (Ninox novaseelandiae), and all three taxa were referred to as the Morepork.

Under this classification system, the "Morepork" was indeed found in Australia and New Zealand - but under the new classification the Morepork is restricted to New Zealand, whilst the Australian population is referred to as the Southern Boobook.

So they didn't get it totally wrong - just 15 years out of date :) this is an error found in a lot of captive collections.
