Orangutans - Sep 2008

There are lots of climbing opportunities in this enclosure, and it is even larger than what is shown in the photo. Both the orangutan and siamang exhibits have a plethora of ropes, vines and various other opportunities for the apes to brachiate.

Dare I ask: don't orangutans--denizens of the rainforest--want to live under a canopy as much or more than gorillas? Only asking because on this site it seems to have reached near-religious certainty that it is absolutely essential for gorilla exhibits to have such a forest canopy (or an ugly cage as a "substitute").

This orangutan exhibit could definitely use a substantial canopy, particularly underneath the often brutal sun in Melbourne's scorching summers. Also, isn't it true that the orangs cannot be seen in this enclosure if they venture into their sleeping quarters? My personal opinion is that this is an above average orangutan exhibit, but nothing spectacular. It succeeds with the sheer volume of climbing opportunities, but fails with rainforest coverage. The siamangs next door are potentially much more interesting due to their rapid swinging and vocalizations.

live trees transplanted during construction. i suppose it is hoped that these will one day form some sort of canopy. i must agree that this is a sufficient orang exhibit that will serve them for years to come, but nothing groundbreaking, new or inspiring.

Indeed they do... I don't think they particularly enjoy using open enclosures for long periods, given the choice they also spend a lot of time in covered areas(often the indoors) of their enclosures. Also Orangutans show a great desire to cover themselves or hide under anything available- sacking or old clothing usually. In the wild they do use vegetation as an umbrella in heavy rain, but in captivity I think this similar behaviour is a response to be under 'cover.'
