This photo is of the desert half of the collared peccary enclosure at Melbourne Zoo. I really like it because the rainforest half has deep mulch, a mud wallow (seen just on the left of the picture), a large group (about 8) and it's all very natural.

is this where the ones that were at taronga a few years back ended up?

pretty sure some are - melbourne had kept this species for years and years in a very small exhibit opposite the giraffes back when there was an "ungulate alley" there. from what i know, eventually all the breedable animals in the region were consolidated to melbourne and fortunately the animals landed this large exhibit in a refurbished cheetah enclosure.

they are (in)breeding well, but with so few lineages left....

Visited MZ yesterday to find the maned wolf enclosure occupied with peccary. Has the wolf died?

And PAT, AZ have three male peccary.

I want to believe that the maned wolf is in it's other exhibit and the peccaries were just trimming the grass but you're probably right in that the maned wolf has died. Hopefully they can get another one or two soon. :)

And thanks for that about Adelaides peccaries.

Have had my fears confirmed.
Dubbo and Altina are now the only institutions that hold maned wolf in the region.:(

I heard that ALtina hold quite a few though so hopefully they aren't a lost species for Australia. That is sad news though and in the next 5-10 years I think a lot more of those carnivore exhibits along the lemur lake will become empty.

Maned wolf are also missing from the map now so I'm afraid the last one has died. :(
