Hippo House, April 2015

The rather nice Hippo House - the pool extends to about twice this size, and there is an outside area as well.

The hippo house is the newest area of the zoo, it also has a large tank for a single sand tiger shark (according to the zoo, the largest fish in Poland) inside it.

(actually, having said that, it may not be the newest area of the zoo any more if the aquarium has finished its renovations and been opened. Sooty mangabey, did you see if the aquarium was open? It wasn't when I last visited a month ago but I expect it to be open soon.)

As of this past week, the aquarium was still closed, unfortunately, although the area outside it has been very much smartened up.

Is the invertebrate house possibly newer than the hippo house?

I think the hippo house is newer than the invert house but I'm not too sure actually. Both are fairly new.

I'm sure you'll have been able to see which sections of the zoo are newer and which are older. There are some really awful looking old bits (primate indoor area especially).

Just out of curiosity, how is Warsaw Zoo funding the vast amount of development that has recently been completed? The Afrykarium and other ventures look to have cost tens of millions of dollars and was that money raised via a public/private partnership or from some other means?

The Afrykarium is a few hundred miles further south, in Wroclaw.

The developments at Warsaw over the past two decades are not so grand. I would imagine most were relatively inexpensive - with the funding coming from the city authorities, and possibly the EU.

Thanks! After a quick Google search I realized that I had mixed up Warsaw and Wroclaw, with the latter the one that has undergone a lot of expensive alterations. :)
