Siamang at Melbourne Zoo

I took this photo a couple of months ago but never got around to uploading it. This is the first time I have seen siamangs in the open topped orang-utan exhibit and I must say they really used the extensive climbing frames and space to their advantage and really showed off their agility.

the siamangs at melbourne are great. after years of being displayed on a lake island where you never got a good look at them - i was surprised at how okay they were with being close to the public once they moved to the new orangutan sanctuary.

they frequently lounge around on the platforms near the glass windows and seem to captivate the public as much as the orangs do.

i think they do a good job of reminding us that despite their small(er) size - gibbons are very much still apes. and they behave much more like chimps, gorillas and orangs than they do monkeys.

in fact i hear a lot of people mistaking them for chimps.

I've heard that too. And even more suprisingly I've heard people saying that maybe they're baby orang utans that'll turn orange when they get older and I've heard people call them black orang utans.
