Proposed Baboon Exhibit - September, 2010

I can only assume the bongo will be moved to another zoo, maybe WORZ. It will be interesting to see what happens to the corner of the zoo the current baboon exhibit is in.

:)

I don't think that it's worth keeping those enclosures, they are very outdated.

I was at Melbourne Zoo last week and all of the trees in the bongo exhibit have been chopped down and the kangaroos in the newer walk-through have been removed and there was work being done to the exhibit. This makes me think that the bongo might be moving into their exhibit when the baboons move.

That would make sense. I'd noticed the absence of macropods in the walk-through on my recent visit but hadn't made the connection.

There is now an odd little (and empty) chain-link fenced "enclosure" between the giraffe, zebra and ostrich enclosure and the bongos. Anyone know what this is about? It looks too small to be the beginnings of the baboon enclosure.

Hadn't that always been there?

If so then the foliage blocking it off from view has been cleared away and new planting done within the enclosure. Which still suggests that there is something new happening there.

are there any heritage listings on the currnet baboon enlosures that not allow it be demolished, or were they built too recently to have any significant heritage listings put on them.

Not listed. Parts of the zoo that are heritage listed are:
- the front gate, along with the front fence and associated paths.
- octagonal galah house, now housing macaws.
- giraffe house
- great flight aviary
- the 'mandrill house' - the empty old-style barred enclosure on the main drive.
