I see that the Lisbon Zoo has ancient bear grottoes along with its numerous wire primate cages...it looks like a zoo that I'd love! Haha. Or maybe it is just a zoo that desperately needs an injection of major funding in order to revamp such outdated enclosures.

Snowleopard, I haven't visited the Lisbon Zoo, but if you look throught the photos, you can see that new enclosures have been developed, so I assume it's a matter of time before the outdated enclosures are replaced.
The Lisbon Zoo has made great strides in the recent future, but it did take the zoo a hell of a long time to finally adapt to modern zoological society. I guess the funding was available before the current economic recession.
The Problem with that zoo is, to many animals, to many species, to small area ! And no Money. Okay, they have build a new ape house, thats good, but they build it four all foour species, altough the zoo has had only chimps and gorillas, so orangs and bonobos came are new species for the zoo ! This is unbelivable. And why it is necessary to keep white and sumatran tigers or two species of rhino, so many antelopes or monkeys or birds ? Why the has a dolphinarium ? Its fact, the zoo has to gave away a lot of animals, to keep the other in bigger and better exhibits. As long as this will not happen, that zoo will be one of the most bad zoos in europe. A Pet Cemetary within a zoo, I can only shake my head....Okay, the zoo got money from that, but I think, there are lot of better ways to get money from the people....
