Okapi Enclosure - Mar 2009, at Lisbon Zoo
The viewing opportunities and the overall appearance of the enclosure are both terrific, but the lack of shade is definitely a concern. Perhaps there is more of a canopy outside of this photo...

...or perhaps the photo was taken in March at a time when winter is ending and trees are just starting to bud?

@ Okapikpr: That's a very good point! Is the building in the photo their holding facility because it looks like their a visitor access or viewing to that building. I've never heard of a zoo with indoor okapi viewing.

There must be a few European zoos with indoor viewing of okapis, and the Brookfield Zoo in Chicago has an indoor viewing area.

London, Chester, Bristol and Marwell all have indoor viewing areas for Okapi in the UK

Thats very cool! How large are the indoor areas? I'm assuming a couple hundred square feet given the average okapi enclosure is only 10,000 feet.

Hi,

I've to agree that the enclosure is a little too open for a Okapi, at least as I see it ... True that it was taken in early March and only now trees is start getting green, but ... don't know how much it will be ...

Still, a very nice enclosure, I believe

The indoor enclosure is not really open to public. This enclosure is on a dead-end and in the end you can get next to the indoor enclosure - that has a dark glass to you. There you can take a close-look to inside and see some stables very nice. But I dont think it was meant to guest to look at ...
