Yes, I never saw the orangutans in the open enclosure ever touch the ground on my two rounds around Orangutan Sanctuary. It was a beautiful exhibit, very lush and big. I thoroughly enjoyed my Melbourne visit.
I have heard from keepers that the placement of the poles was well thought out so that the orang-utans would use them to get between the different parts of the exhibit and not just put around the exhibit at random.
