Yes, they are housed in Lisbon. Badoca Safari Park also tought about having them but it was not worth it for them.
They recently opened to the public a bigger part of the zoo. They have some off-show areas, and that space is really big, and i think Elephants could be easily housed here. The only problem i find is money.
I think Santo Inacio has a very nice future, and could become the best Portuguese Zoo. Zoo da Maia has been in remodelations for the past two years and the new exhibits for many species of cats have turned very nice.
I would love to work at a zoo, specially Santo Inacio. Sadly, i live near Lisbon (15 min. to the zoo, 20 to the oceanarium), wich is a 3,5 hour trip to Porto.
Also, may i ask where are you from? You seem to know a lot about Portuguese Zoos. I understand if you can´t answer.
Well if space is not a problem, I guess it's all about the money. But I guess if eventually they do make enough money, it might be possible. The problem might be competition from Maia, they are close to each other so people normally choose to either go to one or the other.
Sadly? Its great for you to be near Lisbon, Lisbon Zoo is great and has loads of animals there that aren't anywhere else in Portugal, not to mention the fantastic oceanarium.
I'm currently living near Porto, though i'm not portuguese. Haven't been to the zoo yet, but I'll try to visit soon.
I think it will be a long time till there are Elephants in Santo Inacio.
I like living near Lisbon, and i realy enjoy the oceanarium, but i prefer Santo Inacio over Lisbon.
