It does look rather grim, but more could be made of the available space by putting in a network of poles and up into the roof space. It would give a lot more climbing opportunity and a greater area of the space they could use.

Yeah, I never seen a chimp who likes climbing or excercising-its not natural for that species.I bet, Ekatarienburgs Polar bears hate it to swim, and the penguins don't like water either.
I think you will find that is because they have only limited opportunity to do so. With more apparatus they would slowly become fitter/more active I think.
It sure looks cold there with the snow. Presumably their indoors is heated?
Of course it's heated, and chimps can't go outside
The exhibit is lighted up at dark cold evenings (and it's impossible to have a good shot at day because of shadows & glass reflection).
