Interestingly, I have almost always seen them called Horsfield's Tortoise, and Russian Tortoise just a couple of times. Wikipedia doesn't mention the "accepted (by whom?) common name" you give at all, but does also list Central Asian Tortoise as a third option. This case does illustrate the issues of using common names, and the extreme usefulness of scientific names.
