Are the chicks actually fed out alive or are they food that is currently alive? Hope I haven't worded that too badly

I find the whole place to be so unusual tbh, the heron doesn't freak out at all? From what I understand herons are quite nervous animals?

The heron is hand-raised from a fledgeling, rescued after its nest was destroyed by heavy weather.
It grew accustomed to captivity (using all 60 sqm for flight), and not bothered by humans at all, since occupying high-level perches (well, until someone shows it a fish )
