Moscow Zoo

Gorilla outdoor exhibit
I'm surprised that keeps gorillas in (note that the curved barrier appears designed to keep visitors out)

<Sigh> Once again...

Dear fellow zoochatters,

Please don't try to base your evaluation of an exhibit on a single photo. I agree it might not be the aesthetically most pleasing gorilla exhibit in the world, but I have seen enough similar, or even worse-looking gorilla exhibits in other zoos, too.
That said, or rather, written: enjoy the photos of Moscow zoo. More to come.

Sorry, but there is plenty of clear evidence to make an aesthetic judgement of this enclosure, which I have: it is hideous. The crude rock work, the wrong-headed "blending" of dubious architecture and cheap "rock", the heavy-handed structural elements, and the apparent "pit" arrangement are all very well documented in this single photo, and are enough in and of themselves to form a negative opinion of this (relatively new?) exhibit.

The animals may do just fine when the lovely Moscow weather permits them to be outdoors, and perhaps the interior accommodations are good as well, but as a visual experience for visitors this is an unsuccessful and curiously conceived bit of zoo design.

And why DOES the barrier curve out rather than in??? Tough crowd in Moscow?

But thank you for sharing

Dear reduakari,

I'm glad you wrote that last post above; otherwise I'd have questioned myself whether to share any more photos.

As previously mentioned: I have seen better, and I have seen worse. And as you might have noticed at other occasions, I despise the overuse of fake rockwork as much as you do.
To be fair, I took the picture at a time when cold rainy weather and snow do not make it look any better. Maybe it looks better during the warm seasons (which is more than just July and August. btw.), maybe not.

If you personally don't like the aesthetics of the enclosure, so be it. It's not how I would design a gorilla exhibit, but there are worse exhibits, even and especially in so-called "modern" zoos. Why don't you take a look at the gorilla exhibit at Schmiding zoo? You can find it in the "Austria" section of the gallery.

As for the indoor exhibit: take a look at the gallery...
