If he was for nights with the substrate I would not judge this so bad. Because most zoo animals are not in the main exhibit from 5 pm to 9 am. So they are off show the majority of the day.
If anyone is interested, the zoo planned to expand the exhibit nearly twice.
Here's the exhibit plan (pages 9-10): http://zoopark-rostov.ru/userfiles/part10.pdf
I'm afraid there's nowhere to expand now
Btw recently another male arrived from Perm Zoo (Russia), so there are only 2 males, and they're NOT happy without females.
That bear is also from the wild, found orphaned in 2002 (12 years now)
No words about the exhibit, just the animal's story is being told.
He was placed in old exhibit for 1-month quarantine, and should have been moved already.
The reason for transfer was reconstruction of its home zoo (Perm zoo).
Russia has about 7 polar bears in circuses & travelling menageries (transport crate-sized cages for a lifetime), and nobody cares about it.

Never knew there were fur seals at the zoo (just no exhibit for them!).
Actually, the seals were purchased by Kiev zoo as long-pending exchange for bull elephant transferred from Rostov last year (since they didn't manage to get a polar bear, as first planned).
It's highly possible that seals were captured in the wild, which is a cheaper way.

So Kiev zoo made a nice cheating with seals. And they were captured in Russia, as a part of annual live capture quota.

Hello,
I am from the Czech Republic. We are concerned about the female polar bear cub Kometa which is going to be transported to zoo Rostov. The exhibit does not seem to be very good. Is it true that zoo Rostov was investigated by PETA or other organization and that the current exhibit is the result of the incestigation?
