Why all terrestrial reptiles are kept in terrariums with clearly desert conditions? Sand or carpet, small water dish etc. Even for species from tropical forests. And, as you say, no UV and even no heat lamps in some enclosures. This place is a prison for herps.
Ignorance and greed are the obvious explanations.
Even some of pet shops & travelling exhibits (leaving aside hobbyists!) have better conditions.
I pointed out to flaws of reptile husbandry even since 1st visit. This year I was told that 'reptiles get UV at evenings after visiting hours blah blah' - rather a lie than truth.
If the small reptiles are ever lighted (so get attention), there wouldn't be weeks-old piles of poop in their terrariums!
Also, had you notice that those cubes have virtually no air exchange (the ventilation slits are very close to the walls).
