The paddock holds groups of giraffe, ostrich, and eland along with apparently single individuals of Brindled Gnu and Sable Antelope.

Is that pole holding a high wire to keep the giraffes away from the fence?

Exactly so - or at least, that was my interpretation as well!

I can't be the only one who thinks that this space could be used so much better. Surely there could be white rhino and plains zebra included without the enclosure becoming over-crowded?

And Maguari these pictures are great, what other zoos can we look forward to in the coming weeks? :)

Bear in mind this is Cabarceno - they have a huge rhino paddock and two very generously-sized zebra paddocks elsewhere. Cramming stuff in simply isn't their style, and with the space they have there's just no need for it here. So they have giraffe, ostrich and antelope together for a nice display, but the more risky zebras and rhinos - why bother?

As to other zoos, the only other zoos on this trip were Marwell and Santillana del Mar. Photos of the latter will certainly follow - there's a lot of good there but the contrast in space could hardly be greater! Will be popping up some wildlife shots as well. :)

I suppose so, when you do have the space then indeed, why bother! It was the two single specimens when they could support herds of either species or try something different to (possibly ;)) see?

So you just focused on Marwell and Northern Spain then? No Iberian lynx just yet then... ;)

Looking forward to seeing the rest of your shots, both captive and wild! :)

Yeah, not sure of the history of those two - the Sable didn't even appear to be labelled.

Marwell served as a very convenient meeting-up point. :D

We then got the ferry down to Santander from Portsmouth, enjoyed some cetaceans and had three days in Spain before ferry home. Very nice trip! No Iberian Lynx yet - but it's very much on the radar.

I can see the Marwell connection a lot more clearly now, did seem a very odd addition at first! :p Also explains quite a lot about your recent additions to the 2015 Big Year thread.

Good luck with the future Iberian trip, guess it won't be this year though!? :D

Ha - probably not quite yet, no. Would like to do Jerez with some southern-Spain birding at some point. Next trip is a Stuttgart weekend for Zoohistorica - after that, it's up for planning!
