I have never seen Babirusa and Tapir mixed together but these are reasonably frequent in captivity. Is there anything about either species which prevents them from being kept together more often?
Seeing as Tapirs are found on Sumatra but Babirusas only on the smaller islands, it would not be strictly correct geographically, but we have all seen zoos violate this more seriously.
I remember from my visit to Singapore Zoo that Babirusas and Malayan Tapirs were kept either next to each other or very close (on a sitenote, I have never seen as lively Babirusas as in Singapore and the Tapir had a calf, only two of many great Singapore Zoo memories). I can't recall the Babirusa exhibit exactly but the Malayan Tapir one was truly good and now that I see this, I wonder if the two species could be mixed there (Although possibly either one could be a threat to the other's offspring?)
the babirusa enclosure at Singapore Zoo is tiny and awful, and I believe they are also all males there. As far as I know the two species have never been mixed at Singapore.
