Susi´s exhibit is the smallest space i have seen for an elephant in any major zoo ( and i have traveled in Latin america alot). The sooner the 2 elephants are given new enclousures the better. And i really like the barcelona zoo, i have been there 3 times, and i think the reptile house is the best in the world. But those nile hippo and elephant exhibits must go.
I hate the elephant enclosure.... The worst I've ever seen and with the worst vision per part of the visitors since the different barriers were placed.
Will the new house be solely for the use of the elephants ? Have the 2 elephants ever lived together ? It seemed an awful waste of a limited space having 2 separate small paddocks and massive P.C. barriers .
According many official declarations, in this area should be built (finished on 2012) a new exhibit for the elephants, hippos, crocodiles and other animals. The area of this exhibit covers the current exhibits of the elephants, hippos, axis, Pere David's deer, camels, wapitis, vultures and bearbed vultures.
This was repeated a lot of times (in the last zoo magazine for example) but I think that it's another lie of the zoo... why? They have just built the dormitories (only for elephants) in an incorrect place according the projects displayed and they have just built the aviaries for vultures in the area occupied for this new exhibit.
And I agree with you. It's a waste of space and too many barriers. The two elephants have not been together, even the initial plan was to have both on the same enclosure.
