I hate to judge from a single photo but this looks awful! Is this oindoors or outdoors? If it's the former then I hope the outside is an improvement!
I can see that this trip contained two zoos that are completely opposite to each other. Stupid question but did you prefer the vast open spaces or the puny enclosures but very nice bird collection? Or did they both pale in to insignificance compared to the wild sightings on the ferry?

I defy anyone to go to Cabarceno and Santillana and genuinely suggest Santillana is the better zoo!
There are good things about Santillana, but the only area you might score it ahead of Cabarceno on is rare species - and even on that Cabarceno has a few tricks up its sleeve.
And actually, I think my very favourite animals of all on the trip were not at Cabarceno, or Santillana, or alongside the ferry. They were up a mountain.
Well I stand by what I say, this looks awful! Surely this must be one of the worst enclosures in the park, even worse than the "recent" bear enclosure!

What sort of rarities are we talking about? I haven't paid much attention to these photos but they must be extremely rare to even attempt to be as good as Cabarceno and its rarities and enclosures!
The chamois is very nice by the way, better than any distant view of a cetacean!

Cabarceno's collection is actually pretty conservative - mostly what you might call ABCs and EEPs. The exceptions are the venomous snakes and birds of prey, which have some nice rarities.
For Santillana, mammals include European Mink, Sri Lankan Leopard, Spanish Ibex, Iberian Wolf and Spanish Red Deer again, Iberian Wild Boar, Small-spotted Genet, Pied Tamarin, White-lipped Tamarin - plus numerous birds (I saw several completely new ones) and Europe's only Congo Dwarf Crocodile. So it's probably more animal-nerdy overall, but less interesting and less high-quality as a zoo.
The Congo dwarf croc was the only major rarity that I noticed. I did notice Caberceno's very nice snake collection, unfortunately the tanks seem hard to view!
On a side note, did either collection have the standard Spanish invertebrate display; the one with assorted domes of individual species?
