Seemingly a rescue bird - this one flummoxed us. Any thoughts welcome!

With such a large bill and black spot near the throat calandra lark seems the only real option.

Thanks lintworm - we weren't familiar enough with the species to feel sure (particularly as it wasn't in prime condition!).

It's difficult to tell from this photo but to me the head pattern suggests Bimaculated Lark. The clear dark line through the eye suggests this with an obvious supercillium and generally contrasting well marked head.
It would be nice to see other photos showing the tail and wing patterns if you have any.

Surely it has to be Calandra. Bimaculated is the only similar one but it doesn't occur in Spain which seemingly rules it out as this bird seems a local rescue.

It would but im always sceptical about ruling id on range. Both occur as vagrants in the uk so theres no reason bimaculated cant occur in spain. Admittedley it is a long shot but the id fetures i pointed out do fit bimac better than calandra and a vagrant is just if not more likely to be picked up as a rescue. I must admit i have never seen either species and am purely relying on books

Not such good photos, but a couple of extra views are attached for what they're worth. :)

For the record, I only have circumstantial evidence for it being a rescue - but as there were numerous examples of rescued wildlife in the zoo and this was a single, unlabelled and visibly-injured individual of an apparently native species I think it's a fair bet.

Plus they never look exactly the same as in the Field guides! Bimaculated has a white tip/edge to the tail but unfortunately the shot with the tail is rather blurred so that's not clear. I still think Calandra is the most likely.

The second photo appears to show the white trailing edge to the secondaries which would make this a Calandra.
