So great to see all these pictures from a zoo that I have only visited twice, when I was young - some 35-40 years ago. This zoo was a forerunner from the beginning as far as enclosure size is concerned. Almost every enclosure shown so far - including the big savannah - were created in the middle on the 1960s. And this was done in a city with about 50 000 inhabitants, not exactly a metropolis.
The good quality exhibits in zoos stand the test of time amazingly well. The Bronx Zoo's "African Plains" set of paddocks were opened in 1941 and still hold up fairly well. The Woodland Park Zoo's "African Savanna" and their two gorilla exhibits are now almost 30 years old and still look terrific. I've seen zoo habitats that are brand new and basically small and worthless...haha.
