Sumatran rhino

I think two animals were caught in Sumatra; one went to Copenhagen and the other to Basel; in 1959 if I'm not mistaken. I think the Basel one only lived till 1961 or thereabout but the Copenhagen animal lived until 1972.

I like the photo, any idea in what year it was taken?

This is female 'Betina'. She was imported the same year as Copenhagen's female 'Subur', but unlike Subur, Basel's rhino only survived for a couple of years. (I think she's in the museum now). I can't remember the year of arrival(early 1960's?) but this should help date it for you.

I heard the story that Basel Zoo got to make the first choice between the rhinos once they had been brought to Europe and they picked the one thought to be the younger. All right, it may have been younger, but it didn't live long, while the 'second choice' that Copenhagen had to put up with lived for longer than a decade.

According to “The Rhinoceros in Captivity” (L. C. Rookmaaker, 1998):-

‘The female Sumatran rhinoceros ‘Betina’ was at Basle Zoo from 2nd July 1959 until 8th September 1961.
