There are certainly some choice rarities at this French zoo. Species such as Dhole, White-lipped Peccary, Siamese Eld's Deer, Hog Deer, Roe Deer, Central European Red Deer, Burmese Brow-antlered Deer, Barasingha, Sambar, Addax, Beisa Oryx, Kafue Lechwe, Blesbok, Black Wildebeest, Indian Muntjac, Vicuna, Nubian Ibex, Alpine Ibex, Markhor, Mishmi Takin, European Bison, Gaur and Przewalski's Horse are ALL extremely rare in North American zoos. In fact, species such as Striped Hyaena, European Wolf, Crowned Lemur, Black Lemur and White-fronted Lemur are also zoological rarities. That adds up to 28 species that I'd be hard-pressed to locate at very many North American zoos.**
** I think that a future trip to France is needed!
That's an interesting list, consisting of a mix of overall zoo rarities and some that are very common in Europe, just not elsewhere. Nearly 200 zoos are listed for EuroWolf on Zootierliste, for example - and getting on for 300 are listed with hippelaphus Red Deer. Not only European species though - both Vicuna and Kafue Lechwe are pretty common over here (60-70 zoos each).
@Maguari Fascinating information. Vicuna in the USA are found at maybe 1 zoo (seriously, only one that I know of) and Kafue Lechwe are a bit more common but off the top of my head I am struggling to think of any North American zoos with the species.
On the flip-side, there are many Euro zoo nerds that salivate at the notion of seeing a Coyote and three times this year I've had one in my backyard!
