First time I have seen a regional name ("southern") attached to giant anteater. Are there different subspecies? I notice the latin name on the sign is only two words, so no supspecies being identified there.

According to theanimalfiles.com (Giant Anteater: The Animal Files), there are two subspecies:

M. tridactyla artata and M. tridactyla centralis. Not sure how reliable the source is. But, I, too, had never seen a regional name given to the giant anteater.

Mammal Species of the World 3 lists 3 subspecies: tridactyla, artata, and centralis. Of course it's a 2005 publication and already very out of date.
