ZSL Whipsnade's are pure-bred A.j. soemmeringii - Afaik, no A.j. hecki are held in Europe. I'm not sure on America however, so please correct me if I am wrong! :D

I'm not an expert on subspecies in American zoos. Someone like jbnbsn99 would know, though. But as far as I know, all American Cheetahs are either South African or don't have their subspecies listed. I would love to be proven wrong, though!:D

American Cheetahs went extinct at the end of the Pleistocene. :)

As for Cheetah taxonomy, there is a lot of confusion. Since cheetahs went through a recent bottleneck, there is some thought that there are no recognizable subspecies.

Good one. Do you know if there's any Northwest African Cheetahs anywhere?

And to answer the previous question, cheetahs in North American zoos are of the subspecies A. jubatus jubatus, the South African Cheetah.

Ituri is correct. Although I suspect they are all the same - they certainly look all the same to me (even the asian cheetahs based on photos I have seen). When Laurie Marker gave a talk at my zoo a year and a half ago I asked her about this in person afterwards. She told me they are all the same, and I would think she would know.
