A pair of common wombats digging in the Australian theme in Duisburg Zoo, Germany. Common wombat is a very rare species in Europe.

Yes, I know. I was extremely lucky that day! When I passed the exhibit the second time a camera crew was there to film the wombats so the keepers lured them out with various treats and the wombats stayed there for a long time being very active.

Though I have also been very lucky before and seen wombats outside in both Duisburg and Hannover Zoo (missed them in Plankendael).

An almost perfect opposite of my wombat experience - I got a perfect view indoors and out in Planckendael, missed them altogether at Hannover and only saw them inside at my last Duisburg visit (having failed on first visit, when they were still just in the large paddock with no indoor viewing).

The Planckendael visit was in January and both wombats were extremely active. My first Common Wombats, as well, so very much a highlight!
