Dyeing Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius)

Great photo. It's interesting that these poison dart frogs at Australia Zoo are the only ones in the nation, as poison dart frogs are so common in zoos throughout North America and Europe that they are like the meerkats of the Reptile House and I scarcely give them a second look. Australia's importation laws deprive Aussie zoo nerds of a bounty of captive wildlife!

@snowleopard Thanks! Poison dart frogs are currently at five zoos in Australia (Adelaide, Australia Zoo, Ballarat Wildlife Park, Australian Reptile Park and Hartley’s Crocodile Adventures) though Australia Zoo is the only one to have the Splashback Poison Dart Frog (off-display) in the country whilst the rest house a combination of Blue and Dyeing Poison Dart Frogs. They were all originally imported by Melbourne in 2006 but when they lost interest, the remaining group moved to Adelaide followed by a few other zoos. Still very uncommon in zoos here as the only representatives of exotic frogs in Australia (actually the only other exotic amphibians in the country are cane toads and axolotls).

They are a real treat to see and yesterday was the first time I ever saw a poison dart frog. They are just awesome! :D I guess my excitement for poison dart frogs shows how poor the diversity of exotic animals actually is in Australia for certain groups in particular.
