Dyreparken NBV - Chicken exhibit (summer)

  • Media owner Hvedekorn

Housing domestic chickens during summer. During winter, the chickens live in two smaller aviaries (see here and here), but during summer these are inhabited by spotted eagle-owls and sulphur-crested cockatoos respectively.

Dyreparken NBV is a tiny zoo in the town of Hjørring, Denmark. Other than a zoo, it's a workplace for mentally handicapped people, belonging to the titular NBV ("Nordjyllands Beskyttede Værksted", "Northern Jutland's Sheltered Workshop") which organizes work for disabled people. Other than the handicapped workers, the zoo also employs one trained zookeeper.

Area-wise, it's - as mentioned - probably one of the tiniest zoos in the world, not much larger than your average backyard, and as such it only keeps around 25 species of animals, the majority of these species being small mammals and small birds. Most of the animals are housed in fine living conditions.

The zoo has free entry and is always open, though to access the indoor exhibits you need to visit when the employees are at work which is during standard work hours from Monday to Friday.

June 2018.
