Pakawi Park/Olmense Zoo has pretty much the only pure and occasionally breeding group of Eastern chimpanzees (Pan troglodytes schweinfurthii), but sadly they are kept in this disgraceful and nasty exhibit that needs to be replaced by a better one as soon as possible.

I remember being at this zoo a couple of months ago, and the indoor housing was very dark and grimy. Did you use a flash to get this photo? Perhaps the overhead lights weren't on, but during my visit I was appalled at the housing conditions for the great apes. The outdoor exhibit is also very poor and it is just about the very first thing that visitors see when they enter the zoo. Yikes!

@snowleopard I think the overhead lights being on and there also being an open door letting in some light is part of it. Another part is that I used a pretty short shutter speed, so it appears somewhat lighter in the photo than it truly was in reality. This indoor housing certainly is nasty and grimy.

I agree with you that this exhibit is disgraceful and gives a very negative first impression of the zoo which, while certainly not great, is not what I would call awful. As I said before, an improved chimpanzee exhibit should be an absolute priority for the zoo and its new management.
