When they were new, in the 1960s I think, these enclosures were a step forward. They were relatively large and most of the area was grassed, although it's not visible in this photo. There was also a small wooden structure for climbing. On the other hand, the indoor accommodation was much worse, and I think there were only two outdoor enclosures for all the apes, so that they were indoors most of the time.
I think the gorilla is Kaisi, the larger male who was a non-breeder.
