Gelada baboon paddock
It looks very simple. Is the 'cave-like' structure the only rockwork? I should have thought a large pile or two of rocks in the centre might break up the monotony a little.

But I still prefer it to Colchester's exhibit as its more natural and has a much larger area so they won't pluck the grass bare as Colchester's have already done.

Sometimes the simplest of enclosures is all you need, it depends on the animal. The polar bear enclosure at HWP is a case in point. The most expensive thing was to dig out a pool from a natural peat bog. That's the basis of the pool. The rest, other than the built up holding pen area is pretty much as it was for the wolves. The land as it is with vegetation as it is. I suppose the real trick is keeping animals that would be found in simlar climatic conditions (although where the likes of the chimps fit in at Edinburgh!) Apparently for grazing animals the gardners no longer mow the grass. It keeps the grass in better condition surprisingly!

the Rock Hyrax enclosure is off to the right of the picture and connected by a tunnel which comes up just at the back of the rock ledge and cave. I found it quite entertaining when the hyrax popped it's head up one day and the young Geladas were very amused by it!

I hear there is a second hyrax been introduced or to be introduced.
