you can pat them, so long as you watch where the other eels are (they tend to be "accidentally" nippy, mistaking fingers for food, and they carry a nasty bacteria in their mouths that some people are particularly sensitive too, which can make even insignificant nips pretty painful). Surprisingly eels aren't really slimy as such, but in fact feel rather soft and velvety.
