Arizona Docent

elegant trogon (wild)

July 8, 2019. Madera Canyon, Santa Rita Mountains, Arizona.
@Great Argus Madera Canyon is a day use picnic and hiking area that is easily accessible from Tucson (50 minute drive). Apparently they have been hanging out here for a while and are seen almost daily from the main picnic area (Madera Picnic Area). Just up the road from this (1/4 mile) is Santa Rita Lodge, a few small cabins where you can spend the night if you like. I believe the trogons migrate out in the winter? (though Tucson itself is better in winter for birds that migrate in, as well as for raptor free flight demo at Desert Museum). Anyway if you come to Tucson in late spring through early fall and head to Madera Canyon you are almost certain to see it.
